Fresh from a powerful visit to Tomaro Island where the effects of climate change are felt daily and resilience blooms from the roots, the royal delegation led by Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden arrived at the UNDP Nigeria Innovation Center Lagos.
Here, the air buzzed with ideas bold, boundary-pushing, and built for impact. The Innovation Center came alive with displays from some of Africa’s brightest minds working at the intersection of technology, sustainability, and inclusion. It wasn’t just a showcase, it was a vision of the future, unfolding in real time.
In the green tech and renewable energy zone, young entrepreneurs presented climate-smart agriculture systems, clean energy refrigerators, and mobility solutions. These weren’t prototypes, they were already powering communities, creating jobs and restoring ecosystems.
Then came the realm of AI for social impact. A space where algorithms were being trained not for profit, but for purpose. Innovations ranged from AI tools improving access to education, to digital platforms using …..
The tour moved into the world of frontier tech creative economy booth, where technology was not only solving problems, but telling stories. From AI-powered tools helping fashion designers re-imagine African prints and draft patterns and styles that reach global audiences, to Makemation, the first AI feature film in Africa, telling the African story in a bold African way, to photography as a medium of raising awareness and advocacy, it was clear that Nigeria’s creative economy is not just surviving, it is evolving into a tech-powered force for development and identity.
The Crown Princess engaged with each innovator with curiosity and encouragement. UNDP Regional Director for Africa and Assistant Secretary General of the UN, Ahunna Eziakonwa noted that “this is the Innovation we need! African-led, human-centered and driven by the urgency of now.”
For the innovators, the visit wasn’t just a moment of recognition, it was validation. A reminder that the world is watching, not just the challenges they face, but the solutions they are creating.
Innovation is not just about birthing ideas and coding solutions. It is about justice, opportunity, and a shared future. In the heart of Nigeria, that future is being built one idea, one community, and one courageous innovator at a time.
